1. RpgADay2020!
    Giorno 1: Inizio

    251160_600

[Someone asked me for the translated article. You can find the original Here

  3. Word Based Magic System For GLOG and PBTA
Just another system to forget about spell list and make spellcasting more interesting.

For a very long time i had the urge to do something about word based magic. But as usual i keep procrastinating, telling to myself i had to do it, one day.
Then i came across some articles, in particular This , This and the magic system of Ars Arcana

They all have wonderful ideas, so why not shamefully copy take inspiration and came out with something that integrates all of that godsend in one simple system?
I will skip the analysis of GLOG magic (that you can find in weirdelfgames article, that surely is written better than anything i could come out with)

I will only insert here the part that i liked the most:
    CITAZIONE
    Words of Magic

    - You gain Magic Dice from various sources, such as class features or bargains with gods. You spend these dice on spells you cast, and lose them on a 1-3 like normal.

    - There are no spell slots.

    - Mishaps and dooms are determined by the spell cast, so if you were cast Charm Person, a mishap might be charming yourself, where a doom would be making you permanently compelled to follow the commands of the first person to give you an order.

-There are no set list of spells. Gone are the lists of 200+ spells to find in the world, and gone is the dividing line between divine and arcane – all magic is inherited related to faith and spirituality.

    - Anyone who practices magic studies the Words – the platonic, perfected form of some idea or concept. There are some Words that are fairly common among practitioners, such as Fire, Blade, or Reflect. but many are hidden or given only as a blessing, requiring one to devote themselves to a power. Worship Sem the Lord of Change, and he may entrust you with the secret of Becoming.

    - Spell casters combine two Words to produce spells. Once combined, casting these spells is as simple as investing the magic dice for it. A character can have as many spells combined as 2+their level, and they can move them to scrolls or books with an hour of work. Note that says move, not copy.

    - Wands, Staves, and other implements might provide their owners with access t...

  5. Beasts by Health Dices
Handy tables for Beasts divided by Health Dices

I was reading an interesting article by one of my favorite Tabletop RPG writer/game designer/mastermind : Skerples. His blog is a wonderland of amazing ideas and exceptional works like his incredible "Tomb of the Serpent Kings". I hope that every person who will read this will go and read something from there : https://coinsandscrolls.blogspot.com

So... i was digging in this RPG treasure mine and i found gold Jerry! Gold!
    https://coinsandscrolls.blogspot.com/2019/...mmii-fiend.html

    TL;DR?
It's a post about "How to Play As Monsters who level up instead of playing as a boring humanoid character". Seriously, read it, it's time well spent.
But when i looked at the HD tables he posted i was a little bit... disappointed. His work is good, mind you, but there are so many interesting creatures out there and there was no trace of them on that site.
So, here i am, as the good at nothing nerd that i am, to expand someone else better ideas to fit my unrealizable expectations.
Enjoy this table of Beasts divided by Health Dices.
You can use this table as :
    - A base to level up as a monster character
    - A base of inspiration if you look for a plain creature to put in your plain dungeon.
    - An idea for creating your first pokem.... beast tournament in your game.

I will post tables for other monster type soon, so Stay Tuned!

  6. The Backdoor
    Weird Items for weird encounters

    omgNw9E

This is so weird. And i love weird.
Here’s a random magic item for this kind of weird.

    The Backdoor:
The backdoor is a 10x20cm wooden icon depicting a door. When pressed on a flat surface bigger than 3x3m, a 1,5x3m doorway appears at that point.
Beyond the doorway an indefinite number of 3mx3m rooms with openings on each wall, illuminated by a series of torches nailed to the walls that crumble if touched.
The silence is absolute, apart from the slow crackling of the torches.

Once you have crossed the threshold, you can remove the Backdoor to make the doorway disappear.

Crossing these corridors is equivalent to moving on a plane congruent to the material plane (1m of movement in this plane corresponds to 1m in the material plane).

Positioning the Backdoor again on a wall or on the floor allows you to reopen the doorway at that point in the material plane, except if the path to the other side is blocked (example: the floor do not have a room below).

Whenever a creature enters or passes into a new room, roll a D6, starting from the "Unsettling" table.

    Unsettling
1: Something is moving. From now on this creature rolls on the "Weird" table
2: Strange noises. The next roll on this table subtracts 1 from the final result
    (min 1).
3: All the same. You are moved to an adjacent random room. (Roll a D8 clockwise where 1 is the room to the north. This move does not count for rolls on the table)
4: That was close. A cry in the distance. You were lucky.
5: One of the rooms reveals a humanoid skeleton. It won't be there the next time you return to that spot.
6: Everything is silent. Nothing is happening.

    Weird:
1: Movements close. From now on this creature rolls on the "Dangers" table.
2: Disturbing noises. The next roll on this table subtracts 2 from the final result (min 1).
3: All Complete. You are rejected from this dimension, returning to the material plane.
If the point is occupied, take 2d6 bludgeoning damage and are rejected at the point from which you started.
4: Chills. A cold shiver runs through your back.
5: Shadows. Something is moving on the edge of your sight.
6: Something is wrong. The lights become dim and remain so on each subsequent visit.

    Dangers:
1: Marked. Exit. Don't return. Don't change rooms. Exit. Forget the Backdoor.
2: Hunted. The next roll on this table subtracts 3 from the final result (min 1).
3: Mind Freeze. You take 1d12 points of cold damage and are stunned for one round.
4: Dark: For one round all the lights go out.
5: Breathe. A cold breath blows on your neck.
6: Something has changed. All walls have traces of humanoid blood.

  7. Alchemy but You can use EVERYTHING
When the monster you slay is the loot itself.

An article from the D.R.E.A.D Blog https://osrdread.blogspot.com/2020/03/hell...ty-my-name.html has passed by chance in the secret circle of enlightened madmen.

An excellent initiative, which I had never heard of, but which nevertheless offers ideas for giving material to the community AND approaching one of the problems that usually faces when it comes to assigning the loot of non-humanoid creatures. Because, after facing a creature, it's right to reward the players who have dared so much. And what better reward than something that helps them face other foe or better, to become a little richer?
Let's go then and see what we can do!

The basis for the creation of any alchemical compound are the basic ingredients, commonly called Reagents.

    Reagent Powers

Understanding which basic reagents you need for a compound is actually quite simple, although it requires extensive knowledge:
    - The reagents obtain as immediate effect the special ability that allowed the subject to use (Eg: Basilisk's eyes -> Petrification)-
    - Unprocessed reagents cannot show their effect.
    - The potential of the reagent is directly linked to the ability possessed by the subject (Ex: an adult dragon lung will have the effects and strenght of an adult dragon's breath, while the lungs of an ancient dragon will have the effects and strenght of an ancient dragon's breath. ).
    - In order to obtain the inverse of a reagent, the basic reagent is still required.
    - It is possible to obtain less powerful reagents from parts of the subject that have come into contact with the main reagent.
    - The secondary Reagents have the same effects as the primary Reagents but with all the numerical variables halved by default (In the presence of CD, If less than 10 it becomes 10, otherwise the minimum value is 1)

    Let's see some examples:

    t6vtHaS

    Basic Compound Creation

By compounds we mean the reagent's processing that allow the assumption and / or use of them to manifest their effects, directly or by subsequent processing with other reagents.
The time of creation of a base compound is calculated with: Health Dices of the subject from which the Reagent was taken / Hours

    Examples of basic compound proces...

  8. Goblyn Mayem! How to make goblin interesting again
A new way to think about our favorite evil creatures

So somebody (https://t.me/interesting0games check out his channel if you like) told me that past week was supposed to be the #GoblinWeek #Goblinweek2020.
So i had to write an article a day about goblins. As you can clearly see , i was not able to have such commitment to something, not even to my beloved, disgusting, favorite evil creatures.

So i will give you my personal take on Goblinhood anyway, so you too can insert goblin in your setting, making sure that anyone can fear and cover in front of their majesty.

So what are Goblins? Goblins are nasty little creatures that feed on fantasy settings like shameless parasites. Any world have goblins in some way or another: in some settings they are called in some other exotic way, have some strange skin color or be malevolent in different way, but deep down we know that in every dirty and dark place there is a chance to meet a creature that resemble a goblin: small, dirty, mostly stupid and prone to unnecessary display of violence.

    Why?
Because Goblins, like cockroaches, can hide and spawn everywhere, and are the kind of pests that you cannot eradicate without burning everything in a radius of ten miles to their cove to ashes.

But often, like cockroaches, they are ignored, or used like low level cannon fodder for the joy and bewilderment of young adventurers to feast upon.

How can we make so that they become the fearless masters of evil things that they are born to be?

We'll give them the tools not only to defend themselves, but also to be a real menace to the world.
    We'll start with one Goblin.
He only have 1 hp, the kind of challenge that even the most coward farmer with an hoe can fight and win.
One goblin is smart like a small animal, he'll have only instinct by his side.
What is his instinct? To cover in fear and find a place to hide. Better if warm, wet and dark.
How can a race of creatures with a life expectancy of 3 to 5 year and the physical prowess of a teenager to continue existing despite the odds?
Because a single Goblin, left undisturbed, can expel with his sweat and feces hundreds small eggs. If those eggs find a wet and warm place they will grow to the size of a fist during the first hour and will hatch a small goblin in 1d4 days. When the first goblin hatch, he will immediately search for unhatched eggs and devour them. The Egg Feast can endure for days, until only 1d10 new goblin remains, big as a human child.

Now, what happen if we have more goblin? Some said that goblins are more brave in big numbers. That's not it. The fact is that goblins share some kind of mind bond that allow them to synchronize even if they don't even know what that word means. Every single goblin is like a single neuron of ...

So me and a bunch of friends with nice ideas started a 30 day challenge. You can find the details here : http://oicn.icu/2020/28-Giorni-senza-menare/
    So… shall we begin?
    #Parley30

1)How can you steal an Ancient Dragon's Hoard without a fight?

It's not an easy feat the one you are about to try, but listen carefully. What do you need is … another dragon. Better if young, eager to gain some profit to start his personal hoard. Bribe him, do him a favour or something else to make him enter the Ancient Dragon territory. Time the invasion so that when your dragon start to fly inside the area you are the closer to the Ancient Dragon lair as you can.
Dragons are territorial creature, and another dragon in the area can mean only one thing for an Ancient Dragon: a challenge to his power. One that he cannot ignore without appearing weak and old. So 90% of the time he'll fly off to fend off the intruder. That's your moment my dear adventurer. Prepare some bag of holding or portable hole, rush inside and stole what you can. Be careful tho… if the Ancient Dragon come back before you are far away thing can go downhill pretty fast

    2) How can you go past a room occupied by a beholder without a fight.

Beholders can be such a scary creature to face: xenophobic, paranoid and incredibly powerful, there are few thing that they will not attack on sight. What do you need is a big mirror, a good amount of illusion and a little bit of luck.
Because you see the only creature that a beholder can respect enough to let talk is... another beholder, but that is not enough. Beholders are extremely prone to notice defect in other beholders and attack on sight inferior beings like imperfect creatures. So the only way that you can trespass in its room and make it out of there alive is by entering with the big mirror and use illusion to cover borders and every tiny detail that could make the trick fail. Then you need some spell, like a magic mouth to make the reflection speak and other illusion to move the reflection in a realistic way. A beholder always know that a face off is never a good outcome against another of his kind, so you'll be at least able to try and make an arrangement of some sort. Don't be fooled tho, while it is talking to you it's already thinking 100 ways to betray that arrangement, but in the time it will start to make preparation , with a bit of luck you'll be able to run away from it's room to safety.

    3) How do you steal a Lich Lord's Hand and Eye?

There are two "safe way" to recover such powerful items. One require that the Lich Lord reach his full potential: become a Demilich. Why? Because the first thing a Demilich leave behind is its body. Yeah...

  10. Making sense of the Vancian System: Pure Chaos
How to change magic flavor without changing the base system

Making sense of the Vancian System: Pure Chaos

Today i read a very interesting piece of idea written by a friend (@The_kernel_in_yellow https://oicn.icu/, telegram channel :https://t.me/oi_cn follow him if you like, so much good stuff)

    CITAZIONE
    Ok fast arcane magic's refluff
Let’s abolish mages. Away with them! All casters are Sorcerers ( if you don’t have sorcerers in your ruleset use mages without prepared spells, don’t make me lose time).
Then, OSR: Magic is Chaos. Now, what is Chaos? Chaos is Entropy, in the form of metaphysic entity. What is Entropy? Oh come on, is Destruction of Information!

So: Sorcerers don’t have spell slots. They have a list of things they have studied before and that they will forget during the day to launch their spells.
Those strange words they utters everytime? It's Common tongue, or at least it was, before Chaos devoured the meaning.

And scrolls that can be used only one time before disappearing? It's the same thing! Chaos feed on the meaning of the words and the spell is cast.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

This is brilliant in so many ways. First of all: it will be the main reason arcane casters will go all around the world to look for new discoveries or pieces of information. Those heavy books that they keep bringing all around? Great sources of information to consume at the right time. Those grand libraries they keep building in the middle of nowhere or in their majestic towers? More informations to feed to their magic.

But how can we make interesting to play and role play something like that?
Make your spellcaster choose a knowledge area. It could be anything, better if it’s a knowledge skill he already possess. It could be Nature, Local knowledge or History or another kind of knowledge that exist in your game. Anytime the spellcaster will try to remember something he was sure to know in that field, make him throw a percentage die. If the result is lower than his level he forgot that information long ago while casting one of his spell. The number and level of information is equal to his spellcasting slot for his caster level.

What? You want more fluff to it? Well entropy rarely manifest itself without some “collateral effect”. What i’m talking about? Here’s a handy list to choose what happen after Chaos make its entrance into reality for a second.

    Ra...
